On 29 November 2017, the SAEON Arid Lands Node hosted a celebratory closing session for the learners participating in its Science Engagement programme. The event was held at Emang Mmogo Comprehensive School in Galeshewe, Northern Cape Province. Learners from five different schools in the Kimberley area – Emang Mmogo, Greenpoint High School, Tetlanyo High School, Thabane High School and Vuyolwethu High School –form part of the programme. The event celebrated the outcomes of the Science Engagement programme over the three years since its inception in 2014, and served as a farewell to those learners who are “graduating” from the programme, as they are entering grade twelve in 2018.

The “SAEON Kids” were treated to a special programme consisting of song, poetry, dance, games and a slideshow for learners to reminisce on the events of the past three years. All the items were performed by the learners themselves, who showcased their amazing talents. Pontso Mothibeli, one of the graduates, delivered a motivational speech in which she encouraged those still in the programme to make full use of the opportunities they are given. The graduates also received certificates, name badges and CDs filled with memories of their SAEON science education journey. The Science Education team now looks forward to a prosperous 2018.
