Maletsatsi Mohapi is a young lady who grew up in Sharpeville (Gauteng Province). She has always been fascinated by natural processes ranging from eclipses to the blossoming of plants. This is one of the reasons that persuaded her to follow a career in environmental sciences. Maletsatsi studied Geography and Environmental Science and continued by doing her honours degree in Soil Science at the University of the Free State. She was appointed by NRF to become a research intern at the SAEON Arid Lands Node, based in Kimberley.

The following are tasks she will performing as an intern:

  • Assisting in collecting, analysing and recording data from various projects
  • Assisting in laboratory work and equipment testing
  • Assisting with administrative duties when needed
  • Assist with the node’s Science Engagement programme

Maletsatsi‘s main goals for her internship are to acquire more practical experience, to get more exposure to the field work and to network with potential future employers. With the experience gathered during the internship she intends to enroll for a Master’s degree in Soil Science in 2019.
