I am an estuarine and coastal marine science enthusiast. My interest in this field of research started with an undergrad research project that lead me to complete a master’s degree in estuarine ecology looking at phytoplankton and nutrient dynamics in two Eastern Cape estuaries. Now I’m shifting focus into diatom biogeography along the coast of South Africa. When time permits, I can be found playing soccer and involved in outreach and conservation initiatives.

Thesis title: Environmental drivers of diatom biogeographical patterns along the coast of South Africa.

Short Abstract: The aim of the project is to determine for the first time the biogeography of marine littoral diatoms in South Africa and to detect the main environmental variables responsible for these geographic patterns. The main hypotheses to be tested during the project are: 1) Seawater temperature is the main environmental driver of marine benthic diatom biogeography and 2) Marine benthic diatoms exhibit the same biogeographic patterns as the intertidal macroalgae around the coast of South Africa. The data will contribute significantly towards our understanding of the diversity of marine diatoms, the drivers responsible for the biogeographic patterns and the potential impact that climate and global change will have on the coastal ecosystem. Diatoms are excellent bioindicators of their environment, and once the diversity, biogeography and environmental drivers are known, these species could be used to detect change. Therefore, this project will make a significant contribution to our knowledge of the coastal ecosystem in South Africa.
