Mike's Pass

Access to the research catchments, to the top of the “Little berg” at >1800m is controlled by Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife (EKZNW). General members of the public are prohibited from driving up the pass, however, researchers with an agreement with EKZNW are allowed to drive up in a four-wheeled drive vehicle. Mike’s pass is named after the forestry research officer, Mike de Villiers, who was based at Cathedral Peak when the pass was being built. Mike played a large part in getting the pass built. An Italian engineer, G.R. Monzali built the pass which climbs 500m over approximately 10km.
